Limbo

We went out for dinner with some friends last night to a restaurant with extremely low ceilings. Being 6' + I often bash my head on various low hanging obstacles, but in this place everyone was stooped over; I was on my hands & knees!, well almost.

It struck me this morning, why would anyone build ceilings that low in the first place. I know people are generally taller these days due to better health and diets but this was extremely low.

Any ideas?

BTW, the meal and the company was excellent

If it was a very old building I think they were often built with dirt floors and then over the year people have laid concrete and floorboards and carpets and that just raises the floor a few inches - that and the fact that 5ft to 5ft6 was average height going back a few hundred years. Being a short arse myself I rarely suffer from banged heads :)
